Without a single word of explanation Dr Strange, the deputy head, has circulated a memo urging us all to become involved in seeking ways to save money in our respective departments. The piece has gone out to all heads of department and the bursar, who of course gave it to us (which was a bit pointless since we had copied it and sent around the school in the first place). We copied it and gave him a copy back. I gave Derek a copy too, as a reward for his work on the toxic waste.
I also sent a note to Dr Strange telling him that it would be efficient and would save money if we all knew about the Softorque program that seems now to be making such a huge impact on our school.Janice pointed out over coffee that savings were no good unless everyone really was involved in cutting costs. I am not sure who turned that simple comment into “Synchronised Cost Cutting”, but once the phrase was created, everyone used it. By this afternoon there was a Synchronised Cost Cutting section on the staff room notice board, and we all eagerly await the first notice to appear there.
There is also a place on the board for notices from the Dept for Cushions and Soft Furnishings. I am glad to see that ideas from our department can have such an immediate impact.
We wondered what else we could synchronise while we were at it. We felt synchronised estate agents might work. Janice made a rude suggestion and Mrs Marchmount walked out in what I think she imagined was protest, although the effect was spoiled when she returned eating a cream donut.
15 phone calls about the pond. Biology has still not presented us with a briefing paper.
